Deepwell's Front Door Is the Bar Seat on North Main

October 15, 2026

A late-1800s building at 185 N. Main St. in downtown Mooresville used to hold JJ Wasabi's. Since Wednesday, Sept. 16, it has been Deepwell, the New Orleans-inspired steakhouse from Joe and Katy Kindred. Inside you'll find checkered floors, street-lamp fixtures, velvet chairs, and a bar set in front of the windows looking out at Main Street.

Reservations went fast. On opening day, the Charlotte Observer reported that the first open table for two was Oct. 14 at 8:30 p.m., about four weeks out. That figure came from opening week, and availability has surely changed since. The design hasn't. The main dining room takes reservations. The bar seats and walk-in tables are first come, first served, and the indoor-outdoor bar opens onto the patio and downtown Mooresville's Social District.

That puts the walk-in door right in the middle of the busiest stretch of downtown. Within the 100 and 200 blocks of North Main sit four bars with longer hours than Deepwell's kitchen. For anyone without a reservation, the wait for a bar seat turns into a night on the block.

What the walk-in side of Deepwell actually offers

The Axios preview described a building of about 4,000 square feet with a 1,500-square-foot patio and a 24-seat private dining room with its own bar and wine storage. Through windows into the curing and dry-aging room, you can see the meats and house-made charcuterie. Pre-opening coverage estimated roughly 120 to 130 seats indoors plus about 50 on the patio. Those were estimates, not a final count.

Craig Deihl, the Kindreds' corporate chef, is Deepwell's executive chef and co-owner. The menu covers dry-aged steaks, wood-fired meats and seafood, charcuterie, and Southern dishes with New Orleans influences. Before opening, the restaurant said it planned to get Wagyu from North Carolina's W8 Ranch and dry-age steaks on site.

A bar seat gets you the same menu as the dining room. Axios listed these prices from its preview tasting in early September:

Dish or drink Price at preview
Smoked redfish dip $16
Pan-seared crab cake $23
Smoked duck gumbo with crawfish and rice $21
Prime brisket with collard greens and Sea Island red peas $36
Prime T-bone $72
The Cypress: vodka, raspberry shrub, lemon, tarragon $14
Madeira Cobbler with peach preserves and lemon $13

The Observer added NOLA BBQ shrimp with sourdough and lemon, a crispy NC flounder with pommes purée and peekytoe crab butter, and a dry-aged whole NC-style BBQ duck. For dessert, there's wood-fired milk bread with Cheerwine caramel and sweet cream ice cream. Prices may have changed since opening.

Deepwell's website lists dinner Wednesday and Thursday from 5 to 9 p.m., Friday and Saturday from 5 to 10 p.m., and Sunday from 5 to 9 p.m. It's closed Monday and Tuesday. Reservations go through Resy.

The block was already set up for waiting

Deepwell landed on a street that already had plenty of places to wait. Here are its closest neighbors on North Main, with hours as each business currently lists them:

Address Spot What it is Listed hours
152 N. Main St. Dive Bar Neighborhood bar Mon–Tue 3 p.m.–1 a.m.; Wed–Sat 3 p.m.–2 a.m.; Sun 3–11 p.m.
158 N. Main St. 158 on Main Craft cocktails, live entertainment Tue–Thu 4:30 p.m.–midnight; Fri 4 p.m.–1 a.m.; Sat 2 p.m.–1 a.m.; Sun 3–10 p.m.
185 N. Main St. Deepwell Steakhouse, walk-in bar Wed–Sun dinner from 5 p.m.
188 N. Main St. On Tap Craft beer, cider, wine, flights Daily noon–11 p.m.
202 N. Main St. 202 North Main Cocktails and bourbon, music Thu–Sat evenings Check before going

Every one of these bars stays open past Deepwell's last seating on every night it serves. On Tap opens at noon every day, hours before Deepwell's 5 p.m. start. Hours change, and 158 on Main's posted schedule dates to a March 2025 page, so check before you plan around a specific time.

Where the Social District fits, and where it stops

The Downtown Mooresville Social District allows drinks from participating businesses in designated, marked cups from noon to 10 p.m., seven days a week. Drinks have to be finished or thrown out before you leave the zone. The current participant list includes 158 on Main, 202 North Main, Dive Bar, On Tap, and Stardust Cellars, among others.

Deepwell isn't on that list. Its bar faces the district, but a cocktail from Deepwell's bar should stay at Deepwell until the participant list says otherwise. If you want something to carry while you wait for a seat, it has to come from one of the participating bars, in a marked cup, before 10 p.m.

The edges of the district have been described a few different ways. When the town approved it in 2022, Lake Norman Publications reported a zone bounded roughly by Iredell Avenue, McLelland Avenue, Church Street and Broad Street. WCNC's coverage named North Church, North Main and North Broad as included streets and described different outer limits. The signs posted on the street are the authority.

How a weeknight walk-in can run

Here's a Thursday evening built only on the listed hours and the walk-in policy:

  1. Get to North Main around 5 p.m., when Deepwell opens, and check for an open bar seat or walk-in table.
  2. If it's full, put your name down if the host is taking names, then walk to On Tap at 188 N. Main, which has been open since noon.
  3. Back at Deepwell, split the redfish dip and the gumbo at the bar, or go for the brisket. The kitchen's last Thursday seating is listed at 9 p.m.
  4. For a nightcap, 202 North Main has music on Thursday evenings, and 158 on Main stays open until midnight.

On Friday and Saturday, Deepwell's 10 p.m. close lines up with the end of Social District hours. After that, the bars on the block keep serving inside their own doors.

What changes on the calendar next

Two things coming soon could shift demand for Deepwell's seats. Across the lake, Kindred in Davidson has been closed since a small fire in May. According to a Sept. 23 News of Davidson report, the Kindreds' email to guests opened reservations starting Oct. 20, "nearly five months after a small fire." That date is ten days away and still a schedule, not a confirmed reopening. Once it happens, both of the Kindreds' Lake Norman dining rooms will be taking reservations again.

The second is on Broad Street. Churchill Brothers Brewing and RudeDog Distillery share 275 S. Broad St. As of an Oct. 7 Lake Norman Publications report, they had their certificate of occupancy after a yearlong renovation and were finishing their last steps with the North Carolina ABC Commission. Brothers Joel and Nick Churchill run the brewery: Joel brews, and Nick handles the business side. RudeDog grew out of Dave "Rudy" Rudy's move from racing into distilling. His racing work brought the family to Mooresville in 2004. No opening date has been announced. The brewery's site still says only that it opens in 2026.

The same report says The View Beer Garden & Sports Lounge is planned for 155 Pinnacle Lane, with waterfront dining and live entertainment. No opening date has been released.

Until then, the easiest way into Deepwell without a reservation is through the walk-in bar at 185 N. Main, starting at 5 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday.
